New timber species creates bright and beautiful deck

Mandioqueira is very versatile and well suited for use in decking. It is mostly straight-grained and has an initial light golden brown appearance.

I couldn't be happier with my deck. It looks fantastic.

The tropical forests of Bolivia, spanning a huge expanse of 118 million acres, are incredibly diverse. Although abundant in supply, one of the lesser commercially known species of hardwood found in these forests is Mandioqueira.

In 2015 Silva Timber became the sole UK supplier of this fully FSC certified tropical hardwood.

Mandioqueira is a naturally decay resistant wood species that offers excellent performance at an attractive price point. Supplied kiln dried with full FSC certification, its Class 3 rating for durability makes it ideal for exterior use out of ground contact and therefore ideal for decking.  Mandioqueira is also used for boat and ship building, outdoor furniture and other carpentry and joinery applications.

The colours of Mandioqueira appealed to the owner of the deck featured here.  He had recently finished the interior of his home and wanted the colour tones used to flow out into the garden area.  Out of Silva Timber's range of timber species, he felt that Mandioqueira best suited his project.

Mandioqueira is classed as durability class 3 (BS EN 350-2) which equates to a desired service life of 15 years in above ground, outdoor use (BS8417).  Please note that the natural durability classes apply to heartwood only.  The sapwood of all species both hardwoods and softwoods is non-durable. Silva Timber supplies Mandioqueira with limited or no sapwood present.
